about

Pretending that sadness and death don’t exist will not help us escape them. To the contrary, ignoring our darkness is precisely what breeds leaders who capitalize big on that ignorance. Leonard Cohen reminds us that we can spend our lives trying to figure out how to live forever. Or that we can enjoy the ride and help the next generation do the same.
I recorded this podcast just a few days before the death of Leonard Cohen.

lyrics

I heard of a man
who says words so beautifully
that if he only speaks their name
women give themselves to him.
(L. Cohen, "I heard of a man ...", from his poetry collection "Let Us Compare Mythologies")

“I said I was ready to die recently but that was an exaggeration. One is given to dramatization. I intend to live forever.”

“There’s torture, and there’s killing
And there’s all my bad reviews
The war, the children missing
Lord, it's almost like the blues."

“So I let my heart get frozen
To keep away the rot
My father says I’m chosen
My mother says I’m not
I listen to their story
Of the Gypsies and the Jews
It was good, it wasn’t boring
It was almost like the blues”.
